Temple Emanuel of Tempe

Join Sisterhood for 2016-2017 here.

Your Sisterhood has been very active during the winter months.  We ended the year with our annual Chanukah Party.  Approximately 30 women joined forces for a pot luck dinner and gift exchange.  Wonderful food, and a lot of fun stealing from each other as we opened our presents!  If you were not able to join us this year, please watch for it next year.

We introduced a new event this year.  As many of us are animal lovers, we decided to raise funds and awareness for a local animal shelter.  Pastries and Pets was held on a Sunday during Religious School in the lobby.  Meri Kuvent out did herself once again with creative pet themed pastries and snacks.  We collected items and money to bring to Ohana Animal Shelter in Tempe.  Please visit their website at http://www.ohanaanimalrescue.org/ if you are interested in adding a new furry member to your family, want to volunteer, or would like to make a donation.

We also celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat.  We studied the effects both being the caregiver and being the receiver of someone else’s caregiving as some of our Temple Emanuel community members shared their stories.  It was incredibly moving, thought provoking, and a very personal night for everyone in attendance.    I think everyone in attendance, and we had a full house, could relate to the issues at hand in one way or another.  And as in typical Sisterhood fashion, we had wonderful homemade “comfort” foods for dinner and a wide array of tasty desserts.  Thank you to all who brought things to share, and to all to “shared” themselves with us.

On to Bingo.  What a night!  We had approximately 125-135 people attend this event.  The raffle prizes were extra special and 13 silent auctions.   As always, the most coveted prizes were Herman’s Pickle winners!  Thank you to the Hermann family for the generous support each year.   Bingo is Sisterhood’s only fundraiser for the year.  Through Bingo we are able to help some children attend Jewish camp that may not be able to otherwise attend.    Take a look at the attached list of sponsors.  Try to visit them and say thank you for their support.

This March was Aileen Louik’s last time as facilitator of the Lilith Salon.  Aileen started our Lilith Salon and we watched it grow and blossom.  We thank Aileen with all our hearts for all her hard work, generosity and hospitality over the past few years.  With as much thanks to Aileen, we also thank Laurel Ginsburg for taking over Lilith Salon beginning in June.  Dates, times, locations, and RSVP information will be sent out shortly.

Our inter-cultural activities continue to include the Anatolia Cultural Cooking Club. The next cooking class is on April 8 at 2:30, and then April 22. We are multi-generational, not into cliques, have very different backgrounds and interests. The one thing we all have in common is that we like working together.  When you like what you are doing and who you are with, you have no choice but to succeed.   There is something for everyone at Sisterhood.  Check us out!!

Did you know…..

When you join Temple Emanuel Sisterhood you become a member of the national organization Women of Reform Judaism?   As members of WRJ we are part of a much larger organization, one that provides scholarship, aid, education, and support to the Jewish Community worldwide.  WRJ also provides support for our congregation.  One of the ways we benefit from WRJ locally is due to the special relationship between WRJ and Lilith Magazine, provides discussion material for Temple Emanuel of Tempe’s Sisterhood.

We will see you at the Break The Fast table after Yom Kippur closing services!  On behalf of all of Sisterhood, we wish you a happy and healthy and safe new year!

About Sisterhood
