Temple Emanuel of Tempe

A note from Barb Raviol, Sisterhood President

For those of you that know me, you know I live by my LISTS!  I am a List person. So, naturally when writing the last column of the year, I began with a list of all that Sisterhood has done this past year.  I couldn’t believe what our l group of women has accomplished.  This has been an incredible experience for me. I am not new to Sisterhood, but I am new to the “President” position.  I have learned so much from our team and from all of our experiences.   I truly would love to share all that we do with everyone, but I think the only way to truly appreciate any of it, is to be part of it.
Over the past year, we have provided Camp Scholarships to our youngsters, donated money to the Assistant Rabbi Fund, donated money towards our Madrachim program at Religious School, fed the homeless, supported a family going through an incredible rough time during the holidays, provided a break-fast “snack” to our temple family after Yom Kippur, collected items and money for a local animal shelter in Tempe.  We have played together, celebrating Chanukah as only Sisterhood can, attended a couples night out partnering with the Temple Programming Committee, enjoyed our year end Brunch while learning from our guest speaker, played Bunco, and of course, played our ever famous BINGO.  We studied together at Lilith Salons, Sisterhood Shabbat, and at the Women of Reform Judaism Pacific District Convention.  Ok, the last one also involved a lot of play!  But a lot of learning also!
The one common theme throughout all of these events is the dedication and energy that we feel when working together.  Sisterhood is not just a volunteer organization; it is an extended family, a support system for us and for others.  And as in any family, we laugh together; we cry together, we work together.  It is with everyone’s help that we are able to do all of these “events” and more.  The “behind the scenes” work is incredible.    Thank you to all of our Sisterhood members for making my first year as President so incredible. I can only imagine what next year has in store!
Let’s start the year out with some mental exercises, followed by poolside fun.  Lilith will resume on June 5, at the home of Laurel Ginsburg.  RSVP to Laurel at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Join us for Flip Flops and Lemon Drops on June 25 at the home of Meri Kuvent.  After that, keep an eye out for Bunco in August.  There will be more information to follow shortly.
Start planning now. The WRJ Pacific District convention is in San Diego in October 2018. This past year, 9 Sisterhood members attended the Pacific District WRJ Convention in Las Vegas.  We were the largest group from the out of town Sisterhoods at the convention!  It was a weekend of learning, playing, and celebrating.  There is nothing quite like a room of FULL of women praying and celebrating together.
Become involved. There is something for everyone to do. You don’t have to be “on the board” or even come to all the events.  There is always something that you can do that is in your comfort zone, and always an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone when you are ready. There are a few links below if you want to learn more about Sisterhood, about WRJ or the WRJ Pacific District.  The WRJ websites have an incredible amount of information and resources available to all of you.  Don’t be shy, check it all out.  I’ll bet you learn things about WRJ you never knew.

Did you know…..

When you join Temple Emanuel Sisterhood you become a member of the national organization Women of Reform Judaism?   As members of WRJ we are part of a much larger organization, one that provides scholarship, aid, education, and support to the Jewish Community worldwide.  WRJ also provides support for our congregation.  One of the ways we benefit from WRJ locally is due to the special relationship between WRJ and Lilith Magazine, provides discussion material for Temple Emanuel of Tempe’s Sisterhood.

We will see you at the Break The Fast table after Yom Kippur closing services!  On behalf of all of Sisterhood, we wish you a happy and healthy and safe new year!
