MOE Sez: Have a wonderful summer

Summer starts early in the desert, so it’s time to look back at MOE’s 2016-2017 year, which was full of activities that have become MOE (and Temple Emanuel) traditions. Wherever you go this summer, we wish you safe travels, and stay cool! We’ll see you when things start revving up again in August.

Annual Meeting donation: Treasurer Bob Jastrow presented Temple President Chuck Gealer with a $1,500 donation from MOE to the camp scholarship fund at the congregation’s annual meeting on April 27. The money to help send Temple youth to Jewish summer camp comes primarily from proceeds of Café Emanuel, operated by MOE each Sunday during the religious school year.

April 30 Blood Drive: United Blood Services thanked Temple Emanuel once again for stepping up on April 30. In our last blood drive of the 2016-17 year, we exceeded our goal once again. MOE thanks everyone who donated or tried to donate on that day. Watch future newsletters for next year’s schedule. We expect to host three blood drives approximately 16 weeks apart during MOE’s 2017-18 program year.

MOE Poker: MOE’s last 2016-17 Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament on May 4 was another success, with 21 participants. Congratulations to the tournament winner Jeremy Miles.

2016-17 Wrap-up: It was a very good year for MOE even before the end-of-the-year events mentioned above. MOE hosted two welcome back breakfasts for the community – on the first day of religious school back in the fall and then again after winter break; MOE held three successful blood drives (counting the one mentioned above); MOE held another Hanukkah raffle, giving away another $500 Amazon gift card; and MOE held a variety of Schmoozes, poker nights, NFL nights and Shoot the Breeze nights to bring the men of our Temple community together in camaraderie.

MOE Fundraising: Beyond covering expenses, the funds MOE raises do not stay with MOE. They go to fund camp scholarships to help Temple youths strengthen their Jewish identity and for Kiddush cups to our b’nai mitzvah to recognize a job well done in learning their Torah portion and leading a religious service.

Volunteer for Café Emanuel: Come August, if you’d like to help some Sunday morning with Café Emanuel, the primary source of funds for our donation to the camp scholarships, email Harvey Reiss, MOE’s president, at This email address is being protected from spambots.
