Tashlich is a spiritual way to take a break from formal High Holy Days services. Does your family prefer to wear shorts and sandals? Enjoy the outdoors? Tashlich is a perfect time to continue your holiday observance in a relaxed way. You go to a lake, river or ocean and cast bread crumbs (representing your sins) into the water. You then read verses about t’shuva (repentance). The service is very brief, and very child-friendly. You might ask, “How can we just throw away our sins? Don’t we have to repent?” If we think of our sins as external, outside of ourselves, then we can find ways to rid ourselves of them. The first night of Rosh Hashanah, we eat challah and a sweet apple dripping with honey. We want to “taste” the sweet year to help us focus. Similarly, on Tashlich we experience casting off our sins.
