CANCELLED: Menorah Installation on “A” Mountain

November 22 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Update as of November 16, 2020:
With regret, the installation of the Hanukkah menorah on Tempe Butte next Sunday, November 22nd, has been cancelled. Do not come to Tempe Butte Sunday morning!

Due to the spike in Covid-19 infections in the state and local area, we feel obligated to protect the health and safety of our members and volunteers by not going through with the menorah installation this year. We believe the risk is too great to proceed with our plans. This goes along with the City of Tempe cancelling several major events scheduled in the downtown area over the next month. Because of the current environment, our usual Hanukkah party at Trick’s Restaurant has also been cancelled in order to protect the restaurant staff and our usual attendees. We fully expect to be back on track for Hanukkah in 2021.

We wish all of you a very Happy Hanukkah, and may your own menorah and candles provide you and your families with the light and spirit of the holiday.

If you have any questions about our project, please contact me.

Join the Men of Emanuel for the installation of a large menorah on A Mountain!
A message from MOE: “The installation process usually is completed by 12:00 PM. We need about 20 people total to help with carrying the pieces of the menorah to the top of the mountain, assembling the pieces and then erecting the unit.  We will provide all the necessary tools for the job and water. You just need some work pants, sneakers, a pair of work gloves, a hat and maybe some sun screen. The job will be easier this year as we have cut the menorah arms in half to make the carrying job easier.
The menorah will be taken down on Sunday morning, January 3, 2021 at 9:00 AM meeting at the base of Tempe Butte.
We gather at the base of Tempe Butte and walk up to the half-way overlook area. The menorah and tools will be trucked up to that location.  There is free parking on the dirt area behind (north of) the Hayden flour mill with the entrance on the eastbound side of Rio Salado Parkway just 100 feet east of Mill Avenue. (see attached map). Iron barricade gates normally close off this area, but they are open for our event.
The menorah will be taken down on Sunday morning, January 3, 2021 at 9:00 AM meeting at the base of Tempe Butte.
A computerized control panel is used to automatically turn the menorah lights on and off each night.
If this is an activity that you (and friends) might be interested in participating in, email Mel via [email protected].
All participants MUST follow strict social-distancing guidelines and wear masks at all times.
