I proposed we embrace our Judaism by committing to seven specific acts in the year ahead. I’ll use this space to remind you of them in these intermediary days.
The giving of tzedakah is a fundamental Jewish practice. It’s how we know the stereotype of the greedy Jew is a lie. Giving benefits the giver more than the recipient, and helps create a more equitable world. There are many important Jewish causes and programs that need our support. I include Temple Emanuel among them. Give some amount of tzedakah to a Jewish cause, helping to manifest your values in the world. Many of us give already. I’m asking us to give more, in whatever amount, because these times and our hearts need generosity. As Unetaneh Tokef reminds us, “prayer, repentance, and tzedakah temper judgement’s severe decree.” Pledge to give tzedakah this year.
