When Arnold and I first moved to Tempe from the Bay Area in the summer of 2014, we immediately made an appointment to meet with Rebecca so we could join the Temple as soon as possible. The first Shabbat service we attended, I asked someone if she belonged to sisterhood. Her answer was “I don’t have time for that kind of stuff.” I found myself “defending” sisterhood, when in fact, I wasn’t even sure if it actually existed here…Turns out, sisterhood is very much alive and well here at Temple Emanuel of Tempe!
To me, sisterhood is a very important part of my life. In the Bay Area, I was VERY involved in sisterhood; from membership chair to president and everything in between (except treasurer – not my thing). So of course I joined, and, well, the rest is history!
Are you wondering why I’m writing this column yet? A while ago I was asked if I would be the next sisterhood president. Knowing we have such a wonderful group of women on the board, and knowing I’d have all the support I’d need, I said “yes”. I know I have VERY big sandals to fill (we are in Arizona…), and I assure you I will do everything in my power to keep sisterhood going strong!
So, why join this wonderful organization? We are first of all, a wonderful and caring support group of women. We support each other, and, we support our community. We volunteer, we fundraise and donate the proceeds where needed. We belong to WRJ, Women of Reform Judaism which is a support in itself for all sisterhoods in the WRJ.
We have fun and sometimes more serious events: Lilith Salon, Family BINGO, sisterhood Shabbat, membership brunch, girls night out, painting party, Chanukah party, game night, we go to conventions and more. Our meetings are the first Tuesday of every month, and all are welcome!
Here are a few upcoming events you won’t want to miss:
Monday, June 11th – (location given with RSVP)
Friday – Sunday, July 13th – 15th – Area Day in Flagstaff – last year we hosted and it was a huge success!
Oh, and by the way, in case you haven’t already done so,
click here to join Sisterhood for the 2018-2019 year!
At this time I would like to thank Barb Raviol for everything she has done these past two years as our fearless leader!
I look forward to seeing you all soon!
